CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Darby and his damn jet packs,” I grumbled. “We aren’t using these.” I shoved the cumbersome harnesses Case had just handed me—that Darby insisted we take as a precaution—into the back of Tilly. It was daybreak, and we were parked on top of the Emporium, gathering supplies. After a night of zero sleep, we’d come up with a plan of attack. It consisted of packing as much artillery as we could in the craft and figuring out what to do with it once we arrived. It was the only way, since we were at a loss until Maisie analyzed everything with her lidar and NeuDAR, which thankfully had a much longer reach than regular eyeballs.

Daze hurried out onto the roof, carrying a slim titanium container I’d never seen before. “What’s that?” The kid had dark bags under his eyes. Even though he should’ve rested, he’d been too amped to take a break. Just like the rest of us.

“It’s from Walt,” Daze answered. “It’s full of darts.” The kid shifted the thing in his arms, unclipped the sides, and tilted the lid open so I could see the contents.

There were at least fifty injectable darts in a bright array of colors. Some I knew well, like the potent pain blockers in nuclear orange, yellow, and blue. I’d used those on our last trip down South when I’d totaled Luce, and the medi-pod in Walt’s dome hadn’t been enough to heal me completely. Those darts had taken the pain away nicely. I recognized the blue Quell, a serum that made someone extremely easy to deal with. Others I hadn’t seen before, like a sickly yellow and a color so dark it seemed to absorb any and all light.

“How are we supposed to know—”

Daze flipped a panel to expose a color-coded chart. I chuckled. Tranqs, Babble, nerve agents, inoculations, antinausea, and soothers. Leave it to Walt to think of everything. “Excellent. These will come in handy.” Daze shuttered the lid and handed the container to Case, who stuffed it in the back of Tilly with everything else. We were getting short on room. “Head back in and see what else he’s got for us.”

The kid hesitated, shuffling his feet.

I knew that look, but I was going to make him work for it. After another thirty seconds, he finally spread his arms, his face crumpling. “You never said if I could come or not!”

“That’s because I haven’t made up my mind,” I replied honestly. Half of my brain was arguing with the other half. Should I take this innocent child into the unknown or not? “I told you when I figured it out, you’d be the first to know.”

“But you’re leaving in a few hours,” he complained.

“We all agreed we need to get sleep first,” I said. “When we wake up, I’ll let you know.”

“I can’t wait that long.” His voice held a long, worrying plea. “Holly, pleeeease.”

Case was next to me. The outskirt and I hadn’t had a chance to talk about it privately.
